The final week of the regular season has arrived for the University of Evansville men's basketball team, and it begins Tuesday with a 7:05 game at Missouri Valley Conference rival Wichita State. You can hear the game on the UE Radio Network.
THE WICHITA STATE SERIES
Evansville’s longest losing streak to an MVC opponent was nine straight losses to Wichita State before the Aces finally defeated the Shockers at Roberts Stadium on Feb. 6, 64-56. Evansville’s most recent win over the Shockers at Wichita came on Feb. 6, 2001 by the score of 77-74. The Aces have lost six in a row at Wichita. Overall, Wichita State has a 15-12 lead over the Aces in the series that dates back to 1994-95.
BIG COMEBACK GIVES UE THE WIN
In the game earlier this month at Roberts Stadium, the Aces trailed Wichita State 15-3 with 11 minutes to go in the first half, and 31-20 at halftime. Evansville took its first lead with nine minutes to play at 45-44, and extended the lead to 58-44 before eventually winning 64-56. There was a 23-2 run by the Aces through the middle of the second half. Shy Ely hit 12 of 12 free throws and led all players that night in scoring with 18 points. Jason Holsinger added 14, and Nate Garner scored 11. The Aces won the game despite shooting only 30 percent, primarily because they hit 26 of 32 free throws compared to 16 of 24 by WSU, and because the Aces turned over the ball only eight times compared to the Shockers’ 18 turnovers.
SENIOR NIGHT FOR JAY’S BROTHER
Tuesday’s game won’t be the first matchup between sophomore Jay Couisnard of Evansville and older brother P.J. Couisnard of Wichita State. But it’s going to be a very special night for the Couisnard family because Tuesday is the final home game for P.J., who leads the Shockers in points, steals and blocked shots.
A WIN ON TUESDAY MEANS...
...well, obviously not as much as the Aces and Shockers hope for next season. A victory by Evansville on Tuesday would assure UE the #9 seed in the State Farm MVC Tournament. That’s because a UE win would give them the sweep over the Shockers. The #9 team plays #8 on Thursday, March 6 in the tourney opener at 6:00. If Wichita State wins Tuesday, the Shockers drop UE to 10th but don’t guarantee themselves the #9 seed until the regular season ends Saturday. The #10 seed plays the #7 seed in the first round on March 6 at 8:30.
HOLSINGER RETURNS, AND MAKES AN IMPACT
Evansville junior guard Jason Holsinger returned to the Aces' lineup Saturday after suffering a fractured right hand on Feb. 9. Holsinger missed all five of his shots in the first half, then went 4-for-6 in the second half and scored 12 of his 14 points in the final 20 minutes to help lead the Aces to a 63-55 ESPN Bracketbusters win at Eastern Illinois.
WINNING SEASON IN NON-MVC GAMES
Evansville finished the non-conference season at 6-5 with the win Saturday at Eastern Illinois. That was the Aces' first win on the road since defeating Ball State in November. It was also Evansville's second straight Bracketbusters win, both on the road. UE headed south last February, and beat Samford.
UE SENIOR NIGHT COMING UP SATURDAY
After Tuesday’s game at Wichita, Evansville closes out the regular season on Saturday at home against Northern Iowa. That’s Senior Night, honoring Victor Gomez, the team’s lone senior. Tip-off is at 7:05.
