BLOOMINGTON, Ill.—The University of Evansville softball team fell to the Indiana Hoosiers, 7-4, on Wednesday at IU Softball Field. With the loss, the Aces fell to 14-8, while the Hoosiers improved to 7-19.
The Hoosiers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning with a RBI double by Emily Burgeson and a RBI single by Jennilee Huddleston.
With two outs in the fourth inning, Jacki Bradley tripled to score Jennifer Stahlhut, and Amanda Ockomon drove in Bradley from third to tie the game, 2-2.
The big blow for the Aces came in the fourth inning. Brittany Devitt put the Hoosiers up with a RBI single to score Jennifer Glueckert, and then Tory Yamaguchi launched a grand slam to put the Hoosiers up 7-2.
The Aces tried to rally back in the top of the seventh with two outs. With Krista Price at first base, Brittany Herald hit her third home run of the season to pull the Aces to within three runs. Jennifer Stahlhut was retired on a groundout to end the game.
Herald was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. Ockomon also had two hits and a RBI in the game. Shirk and Bradley accounted for the other two of the Aces’ six hits.
Bradley took the loss for the Aces, giving up five earned runs on eight hits in four innings. Hobbs pitched two innings of scoreless relief with no hits and a strikeout.
Monica Wright picked up the complete game win for the Hooisers, surrendering four runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
The Aces (14-8) will return home to Cooper Stadium to host Wichita State this weekend. The Aces and Shockers will face off in a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday. First-pitch is scheduled for noon both days.
