Homers And Pitching Lift Aces Over Shockers

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Evansville softball team picked up the win in the third game of the three-game series with Wichita State. The Aces shut out the Shockers, 5-0, behind junior Ashley Hobbs at Cooper Stadium on Sunday.
 
The Aces struck early with a two-run home run off the bat of Brittany Herald in the bottom half of the first inning. The homer was Herald’s fourth of the year and the 17th of her career.
 
After giving up a leadoff single in the third inning, Hobbs retired the 14 of the last 15 batters in the game.
 
The Aces got two insurance runs in the fifth inning off a two-run single from Kristen Shirk with the bases loaded to score Laura Rather and Cassey Kemna.
 
Jennifer Stahlhut led the Aces at the plate, going 2-for-3 with her second home run of the season coming in the sixth inning. Lissa Fehlman also had a base hit for the Aces.
 
Hobbs pitched the complete game victory, giving up just three hits while striking out four.
 
The Aces tagged Wichita State’s Ashly Bright for five runs on four hits in five innings.
 
The Aces (16-9, 4-2) will host Western Kentucky on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Cooper Stadium.
