For the second-straight Wednesday, the University of Evansville baseball team will take on one of the nation's best programs from the Southeastern Conference, as this week, the Purple Aces will travel down I-64 to Lexington, Kentucky to battle the nationally-ranked Kentucky Wildcats in a non-conference affair. First-pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. central time.
Last Wednesday, Evansville dropped a tough 4-3 decision to then-#5 Vanderbilt in Nashville. Now, Evansville will be in search of its first victory of the year on Wednesday at UK. Sophomores Alex Acheson (.462/0/2) and Andy Pascoe (.320/0/4) and junior infielder Andy Smith (.364/0/4) will anchor UE’s attack against a Kentucky squad which is ranked in every major collegiate baseball poll, including as high as ninth in the Collegiate Baseball Top 30.
The Wildcats are currently 9-0 and have outscored the opposition 121-21 to start the season. Kentucky outfielder Sawyer Carroll currently leads the UK attack with a .600 average, five home runs and 23 RBI, and is coming off of a week in which he was named the national player of the week after hitting home runs in four consecutive games while going 14-for-21 at the plate.
Wednesday’s match-up will feature a pair of sophomore left-handers facing one another, as UE’s Sean McCarthy (0-1, 3.38 ERA) will square off with Kentucky’s James Paxton (1-0, 0.00 ERA). Evansville leads the all-time series over Kentucky, 8-6, including picking up a 5-4 come-from-behind victory against the Wildcats last May at Braun Stadium.
