It’s been a good week for the University of Evansville basketball program. Head coach Marty Simmons and his staff added their second newcomer in two days with the signing of Kaylon Williams, a 6-4 guard from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Yesterday, the Aces signed James Haarsma, a 6-7 forward from Kenosha, Wisconsin. Haarsma and Williams become the third and fourth additions to the 2008-09 Purple Aces’ team, joining fall signees C.J. Erickson, a 6-6 forward from Excelsior, Minnesota and Denver Holmes, a 6-4 guard from Olathe, Kansas. “It has been a very good week for us,” said Simmons, who just completed his first season as head coach at his alma mater. “Kaylon is a big, fast guard. He’s a very good playmaker who sees the court well. And he loves to compete. He has a chance to be really good.” Williams averaged 17.4 points and 8.1 assists as a senior in leading Kennedy High School to a 22-4 record and fourth place in the Class 4A state tournament. Kennedy was 63-11 in Williams’ three years on the team. He is the all-time assist leader in school history with 508, easily breaking the old record of 370. He is also the third leading scorer in school history. Williams earned first team all-state and conference player of the year honors as both a junior and senior. In addition, he was the leading scorer in the Iowa 4A state tournament as a junior and senior. Williams is the second player from Cedar Rapids to join the Evansville program. Nate Garner, a graduate of Washington High School, goes into his senior year with the Aces in 2008-09.
