MARTIN, Tenn.—The University of Evansvill softball team hit three home runs en route to a 5-1 victory over the University of Tennessee-Martin at Bettye Giles Field on Wednesday.
The Skyhawks put the first run of the game on the board in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run by Greer Long off of Ashley Hobbs.
The Aces answered in the third inning with a two-run home run off the bat of Brittany Herald to put the Aces up 2-1.
The Skyhawks would leave runners on base each of the last innings but the Aces’ pitching and defense was able to strand all seven runners.
The Aces put three more runs on the board in the fifth inning with back-to-back home runs from Herald and Jennifer Stahlhut. Herald’s second home run of the day scored Krista Price from second.
Herald and Stahlhut both turned in 3-for-4 performances. Herald tallied four RBI in her three hits. Stahlhut was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle with a single, double, and her third home run of the season. Kristen Shirk, Cassey Kemna, and Jacki Bradley all had base hits for the Aces.
Ashley Hobbs started the game, giving up just two hits, including the home run in two innings. Jennifer McKee pitched 1.1 innings and gave up two hits, while picking up her eighth win of the seaon. Bradley closed the game, going 3.2 innings and giving up three hits. The Aces’ pitchers combined for five strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
The Aces (18-9, 4-2) will return to Missouri Valley play this weekend at Illinois State. The three-game series will start at noon on Saturday with the first game of the doubleheader.
