LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The University of Evansville softball team was edged 5-4 by the University of Louisville at Ulmer Field on Tuesday in the final non-conference game of the season for the Aces.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run double by Colby Wherry.
The Aces answered in the top of the third with four runs of their own off of Cardinals’ pitcher Kristen Wadwell. Laura Rather picked up an RBI with a single to score Kristen Shirk for the first run of the game. Krista Price then reached on a misplay in the outfield to allow Amanda Ockomon to score. Jamie Lindauer was hit to load the bases for Brittany Herald, who drove in two runs with a single to give the Aces a 4-2 lead.
The Cardinals pulled within one run with an RBI single in the fourth inning by Kristi Cunningham to score Brittany York.
The Aces loaded the bases with two outs with singles by Rather and Price and a Lindauer walk but could not capitalize as Wadwell was able to get out of the inning by getting Herald to foul out.
Sarah Totten drove in the tying run with an RBI single by Cunningham and then came around to score the winning run with two outs on a single by York.
Jennifer McKee took the loss in relief of Ashley Hobbs. McKee went 2.2 innings, giving up two runs on four hits. Hobbs went four innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits while striking out three.
Wadwell picked up the win, giving up four runs on seven hits in the complete game victory.
Rather led the Aces, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Herald picked up two RBI on the day with her single. Jacki Bradley, Jennifer Stahlhut, and Ockomon all had base hits in the game.
The Aces will host their final series of the season when Indiana State comes to Evansville over the weekend for a three-game series. The Aces and Sycamores will open the series with a doubleheader at noon on Saturday at Cooper Stadium.
