The University of Evansville softball team will host Southern Illinois in a midweek conference game on Wednesday at Cooper Stadium.
The Aces went 2-3 in last week’s games. They picked up midweek wins against Western Kentucky and Tennessee-Martin. In conference play this weekend, the Aces dropped their three-game series at Illinois State.
The Aces held on to a 6-5 victory at home against Western Kentucky. Jacki Bradley collected her second home run of the season to put three runs on the board in the third inning. Home runs by Brittany Herald and Jennifer Stahlhut powered the Aces past the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks by a score of 5-1.
Errors plagued the Aces at Normal, Illinois over the weekend. Coming into last week, the Aces had the 11th best defense in the nation with a .976 fielding percentage. After committing just 19 errors in the first 27 games of the season, the Aces committed six errors at Illinois State. The Aces' fielding percentage dropped from .976 to .972.
Herald had four walks in the series to move her into third all-time at UE with 75 career walks. The Redbirds’ pitching staff held the Aces to just 13 hit and four runs in the series.
The Salukis (22-15, 8-3) are coming off a three-game sweep of Indiana State at Carbondale over the weekend. The Salukis are led by MVC Pitcher of the Week Nikki Waters. The freshman went 3-0 last week with three complete game shutouts and 24 strikeouts.
First-pitch for Wednesday’s game against Southern Illinois is scheduled 5 p.m. The Aces will then travel to Creighton for a three-game series this weekend.
