EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Evansville softball team dropped its fourth straight Missouri Valley Conference game, 2-0, on Wednesday against the Southern Illinois Salukis at Cooper Stadium. The Aces fell to 4-6 in conference play, while the Salukis improved to 9-3 to move into first place in the MVC.
The game was a pitcher’s duel between Jacki Bradley and SIU’s Danielle Glosson for the first five innings but the Aces picked up another loss late in the game.
The Aces had a chance to put together some runs in the third inning. Laura Rather just missed her fifth home run of the season with a deep fly ball to straightaway center that was caught by Krystal Stein. Glosson then issued the game’s only walk to Lissa Fehlman. Amanda Ockomon followed with a bunt that she beat out at first to move Fehlman into scoring position with just one out but two pop outs ended the inning.
SIU put together a run in the top of the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly from Katie Wilson to score Alicia Garza who led off the inning with a double.
The Aces left runners on in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, but Glosson was able to protect the Saluki’s scoreless inning streak in tact.
Katie Schmidt gave the Salukis and insurance run with a home run to center in the top half of the seventh inning.
The Aces were only able to muster three hits in the game. Ockomon was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, and Brittany Herald added a base hit in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Glosson went the distance for the Salukis, giving up just three hits while striking out five.
Bradley took another tough loss for the Aces, giving up two runs on five hits and striking out four.
The Aces will travel to Creighton for a three-game series in MVC play this weekend. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon and conclude with a single game on Sunday at noon.
