Aces Earn Parade All-America, Gatorade Player Of The Year Honors

The incoming freshman class is already one of the most heralded in University of Evansville men’s soccer history.  Now, two more major honors have come the Purple Aces’ way.

Goalkeeper Phil Boerger (Jamestown, N.D./Jamestown) has been chosen as a member of the prestigious Parade Magazine All-America Team, and midfielder Mitch Day (Newburgh, Ind./Evansville Memorial) has been selected as the Gatorade Indiana State Player of the Year.

Boerger (pronounced ‘Burger’) was one of four goalkeepers on the Parade All-America Team, and one of only two players from a northern tier state to make the elite squad.  The 2007 North Dakota Mr. Soccer was a member of the US Soccer youth national team pools in the under-15 and under-17 age groups.  Boerger was also selected for the Interregional all-star team in 2006, and was chosen as an all-star in the Adidas Elite Soccer Program (ESP) in 2007.

Day helped lead Memorial to the 2007 IHSAA state championship and a number two national ranking by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.  He received the Eugene Cato Mental Attitude Award at the state finals.  A center midfielder, Day was chosen earlier as an NSCAA All-American. He is the second consecutive Gatorade Indiana State Player of the Year to attend the University of Evansville.  Robby Lynch won the award last year, and went on to become the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year.

“Both Phil and Mitch have had outstanding youth careers, and we are expecting them to continue that form here at the University of Evansville,” Coach Mike Jacobs said.   “The honors and accolades that they received are well-deserved.”
