It took an extra inning to get the job done, but the University of Evansville managed to split Saturday's doubleheader with Chicago State thanks to Greg Wallace's walk-off double in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Wallace's smash brought across Peter Tountas and pinch runner Jared Baehl to give the Aces a 4-3 win over the Cougars following Chicago State's 17-3 victory in game one. The same two teams play another pair of seven-inning games on Sunday at Braun Stadium, beginning at 12 noon.
Freshman pitcher Zach Taylor kept the Aces close in game two, giving up only one earned run in six innings. Evansville tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Shawn Kuester lined a basehit to score Tountas, who reached base earlier with his second hit of the game off Chicago State starter Chris Freshour.
The Cougars went ahead 3-2 in the eighth on an RBI single by Victor Perez against Aces' closer #J.R. Carbonell#, but CSU didn't stay ahead for long. Tountas and Andrew Gher walked to begin the eighth. Nate Smith's sacrifice bunt against reliever Michael Storrs moved up both runners, and after Kuester was intentionally walked to load the bases, Wallace smoked a line drive into the gap in left center to end the game and give Evansville its 11th win of the season. Carbonell picked up his first victory of the year. He also leads the Aces with four saves.
Josh Applebaum gave Chicago State all the power that the Cougars needed Saturday in game one. Applebaum went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and six RBIs. He had a three-run home run in the second inning, and drove in three runs with a pair of singles in two at-bats during Chicago State's 10-run sixth inning.
