EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Evansville swept a doubleheader against Indiana State on Saturday at Cooper Stadium. The Aces shut out the Sycamores, 3-0, in the opening game and came back late in the second game to win 4-3.
Game 1
On senior day at Cooper Stadium, it was only fitting that the Aces’ four seniors were the stars in the first game.
Senior Jacki Bradley picked up the win for the Aces, shutting out the Sycamores in the complete game win. Bradley allowed seven runs and struck out two in the game.
Indiana State threatened early in the game, leaving runners at second and third in the first inning, leaving seven on base in the game.
The Sycamores tried to get something going in the third but Krista Price gunned down Lindsey Starwalt, trying to steal third, to end the inning.
Senior Brittany Herald got the scoring started with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning to score Price from second.
Cassey Kemna drove in the Aces’ second run with a triple to left to score Jennifer Stahlhut before scoring on an RBI hit by Laura Rather to give the Aces a 3-0 lead en route to the eventual win.
Meagan McCurdy was tagged with the loss for the Sycamores, going seven innings and giving up three runs on eight hits.
Stahlhut and Price led the Aces at the plate with two hits each, while Jamie Lindauer also contributed a hit in the game.
Game 2
It took all three Aces’ pitchers, but the Aces pulled out a 4-2 win over the Sycamores in game two to clinch the series.
The Aces took advantage of two errors in the third inning to get on the board first. With two outs in the inning, Price reached on a fielding error, stole second, and reached third on the throwing error before eventually scoring on an RBI double by Kristen Shirk. Shirk would come around to score on a double by Herald to give the Aces a 2-0 lead.
The Sycamores would answer with two runs thanks to a home run by Kelsey Anderson to tie the game.
Ashley Hobbs was replaced by Jennifer McKee in the top of the sixth. Hobbs went five innings and gave up two runs on five hits.
Amanda Ockomon came through for the Aces and knocked in the winning runs with a single in the sixth to score Kemna and Sophia Galati.
Indiana State’s rally fell short as the Sycamores could only manage one run in the seventh.
McKee took the win, pitching an inning of scoreless relief and giving up a hit. Bradley picked up the save, giving up one run on two hits in the seventh inning.
Shirk led the Aces with a 2-for-3 performance with two hits and a RBI. Herald and Ockomon accounted for the other two Aces’ hits.
The Aces (24-20, 10-12) and Sycamores will conclude the series on Sunday with a single-game at noon at Cooper Stadium.
