The Purple Aces' men's soccer team accomplished all it set out to do Tuesday night, winning with a shutout, maintaining the Mayor's Cup, and getting every available player into the match.  

The 3-0 win over the University of Southern Indiana gave the University of Evansville another positive step toward the regular season, which begins August 29.  Before that comes one more exhibition match, on Sunday against Bellarmine University.

The Aces dominated Tuesday's friendly, firing 21 shots to USI's four.  Junior Sam Bornstein put the Aces ahead 1-0 at the 12:51 mark when he headed Kieran Purcell's corner kick past Screaming Eagles' goalkeeper Andrew Haley.  UE went up 2-0 four minutes before the halftime break when Mike Luttrull and Richard Menjivar set up freshman Jarrett Robbins in the middle, just five yards out from the goal mouth.  Robbins' blast went untouched to put the Aces up by a pair.  The only score of the second half came from Luttrull, who weaved around two defenders and scored just inside the near post at the 46:44 mark.

"We wanted to establish ourselves and attempt to play in their half of the field as much as possible," said coach Mike Jacobs. "They started off with a high line defensively that invited us to play behind them, and when that happened, it really opened up the midfield. It was nice for us to give so many of our players a chance to play in a game with a big crowd and with a lot at stake because of the community interest. We have a lot of players competing for playing time, and that's great because the competition makes us a better team."

Evansville is now 8-1 in the all-time exhibition series against USI.  This was the fifth friendly in the last six years between Evansville's two colleges.
