LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Tyler Crawford? Who's Tyler Crawford? Aces' soccer fans haven't seen him play yet, but the University of Detroit saw plenty of him here Friday night.
The redshirt freshman transfer from the University of Wisconsin made his collegiate debut in the second half, and responded with one goal and one assist in the University of Evansville's 2-0 season opening victory over Detroit in the first round of the University of Kentucky Invitational. The Aces play Central Arkansas in the final round Sunday at 11 a.m. CDT.
Crawford transferred to Evansville late in the summer after redshirting at Wisconsin last season. With his NCAA paperwork finally complete, he became eligible this week and Coach Mike Jacobs put him into Friday's match to begin the second half. Crawford helped break a scoreless tie in the 81st minute when he fed a through ball to Mike Luttrull, who slippedbehind the Titans' defense and scored the first goal of the season. Then it was Luttrull's turn to return the favor in the 88th minute. Luttrull took goalkeeper Alec Dufty's long kick and flicked it to Crawford, who tallied his first goal and wrapped up the victory for UE.
"Tyler really gave us a shot of life," Jacobs said about his 5'7" forward from Columbia, Ill. "We created tons of chances throughout the match, but we put some pressure on ourselves because we couldn't finish. Then we finally broke through in the final 10 minutes. It was a great all-around team effort."
Evansville outshot the Titans 17-6. Dufty made three saves for the Aces to earn his fifth career shutout and give UE its first victory in a season opener since 2004.
