LEXINGTON, Ky. -- It's been a strong start for the University of Evansville men's soccer team. The Aces improved to 2-0 in the final round of the University of Kentucky Invitational Sunday with a 3-0 victory over Central Arkansas.
This is the first time since 2002 that Evansville has started a season with two consecutive shutout wins.
Defender Kipp Erskine put Evansville on the board in the 33rd minute when he headed in a long throw-in from Tom Irvin. The score remained 1-0 until the 83rd minute when sophomore forward Mike Luttrull scored his second goal of the weekend, this time on assists from freshmen Tyler Crawford and Richard Menjivar. Sophomore Mitch Mansfield added the final tally of the day in the 89th minute, with Crawford and Mitch Day getting the assists. Luttrull finished the weekend with two goals and one assist for five points, and Crawford totaled one goal and three assists for five points. Each scored goals in Friday's 2-0 win over Detroit.
Goalkeeper Alec Dufty picked up his second shutout in three days, equaling the number of solo shutouts that he tallied in 2006 and 2007.
"We dictated the tempo and forced the opponent into their half of the field," Coach Mike Jacobs said, "but it took us awhile to really break through. This was the type of game where we showed a lot of character, discipline and focus to get two goals in the last 10 minutes."
Luttrull, Crawford and freshman defender Justin Sass were chosen for the all-tournament team. Kentucky and Evansville were 2-0, and the Wildcats won their own tournament on goal differential
The Aces play again next Sunday at home against Butler at 3:00 CDT.
