EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Evansville softball team will be hosting “Crowd the Coop” on Saturday, September 27 at Cooper Stadium. The event will feature a softball tournament between UE, University of Southern Indiana, and Southern Illinois at Edwardsville with the proceeds benefiting Special Olympics Vanderburgh County.

Head coach Gwen Lewis spoke at the Special Olympics awards banquet in June and was moved by the atmosphere and passion she saw.  In an effort to raise money and awareness for the program the UE softball team has put together this event to benefit Special Olympics.

“After Coach Lewis spoke at our banquet in June, she contacted me and put this event together,” said Mike Chapman, the SOVC coordinator.  “The support of the University's athletic program exemplifies the character and dedication to the community that the University of Evansville is known for.”

UE has partnered with USI to try and sell 1,000 tickets for the event. After the second of the three games, five SOVC teams will be recognized for receiving either gold or silver medals in their respective events.

“I felt it was important for our team to get involved and try to make a difference for such a great cause,” said Lewis.  “I hope we can make an impact on these athletes as much as they have made an impact on others.”

Tickets will be available at the gate for $5. There will be several raffle items throughout the day and a concession stand with hot dogs, hamburgers, brats, and much more. In addition, representatives from SOVC will be on hand with information on how people can donate and volunteer with Special Olympics.

The tournament will kick off at noon with a game between SIUE and USI. UE and SIUE will match up in the second game at 2 p.m., and the day will conclude with the UE and USI game at 4 p.m.
