The University of Evansville softball team wrapped up its fall season with a record of 6-2 after splitting this weekend with Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and the University of Southern Indiana.
The Aces hosted “Crowd the Coop” over the weekend to benefit Special Olympics Vanderburgh County.
“The event was a huge success,” said head coach Gwen Lewis. “We raised awareness about Special Olympics in our community and that was one of our goals. We hope to make a sizeable contribution to their organization. I want to give a special thank you to USI and their fans for embracing this project, and we look forward to continuing this event in years to come.”
The Aces dropped their game against SIUE, 4-3. Jennifer McKee took the complete game loss, giving up three runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Amanda Ockomon was 2-for-3 in the game with the Aces’ only home run of the season. Kristen Shirk had and RBI triple, and Krista Price had a double to score Jamie Lindauer, who scored two of the four runs.
The Aces rebounded with a 3-1 win over USI in the last game of the day. Kylie Wagner picked up the complete game win, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out five batters. Jennifer Stahlhut was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, two singles and a RBI. Shirk had a single in the third inning and a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to account for the other two runs.
“We competed very well this fall considering the youth factor in this years squad,” said Lewis. “There were many positives all the way around, and we were just a whisper away from going undefeated in one of our toughest fall campaigns. Our team has all the ingredients to be a huge success story this spring.”
Ockomon led the Aces this fall, hitting .473 with four doubles, a home run, and eight RBI. Defensively, she only committed one error and held a .976 fielding percentage. Shirk hit .400 with three doubles, a triple and six RBI. She did not commit an error in 39 attempts.
On the mound, Wagner finished with a 5-0-1 record, pitching 27 innings with 21 strikeouts and just three walks. She had a 1.56 earned run average and held opponents to a .222 batting average. She helped herself at the plate, hitting .450 with two triples, three RBI and five walks.
