Will Bruin's second goal of the match gave 16th ranked Indiana University a 3-2 overtime victory Tuesday night against the University of Evansville in front of a crowd of 2,360 at Black Beauty Field, the 11th largest crowd in UE soccer history. It was also the biggest crowd to watch an Aces' soccer match since UE moved into Black Beauty Field At Arad McCutchan Stadium in 2000.
The Hoosiers jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the second half on goals by Bruin at 46:05 and Daniel Kelly at 51:29. Evansville got on the board at 64:17 when Mike Luttrull scored his eighth goal of the season on assists from Richard Menjivar and Tom Irvin. The Aces tied it at 2-2 at 72:43 when junior defender Reggie Edu rebounded Kieran Purcell's direct kick that bounced off IU goalkeeper Chay Cain. It was the first goal of Edu's career.
Bruin's golden goal came 3:12 into the first overtime, a blast from 12 yards on the right side that went just to the left of UE goalkeeper Alec Dufty. Eric Alexander and Rich Balchan set up the game-winner with quick touch passes that found Bruin open on the left side.
"We gave up a couple cheap goals, but then this team showed its character when it pulled back after being down 2-0," said Coach Mike Jacobs. "For our nucleus of freshmen and sophomores to do that is unbelievable."
