WICHITA, Kan. -- Evansville led the game for the first 39 minutes and 50 seconds Sunday afternoon, but it wasn't enough thanks to Toure Murry's three-pointer with 10 seconds to play that gave Wichita State a 51-50 victory over the Aces.
Evansville is back in action Wednesday at Drake at 7:05. The game can be seen on AcesTV, and will be broadcast by the Aces Basketball / Old National Bank Radio Network.
Evansville (12-7, 4-5) took control in the first half, building a 10-point lead at 26-16 in the first half on a bucket by Shy Ely. Ely hit five field goals in the first half, one more than Wichita State's entire team totaled in the first 20 minutes.
Wichita State (9-11, 3-6) cut the Aces' lead to four at 32-28 early in the second half, but Evansville went on a 9-2 run to widen the margin to 11 at 41-30. Just when the Shockers looked like they were done, however, they outscored the Aces 9-1 to cut Evansville's lead to 45-42 with four minutes to go. Evansville took it back up to seven, but field goals by J.T. Durley and David Kyles, and free throws from Durley and Murry put the Shockers in position to win it.
Ely hit one of two free throws with 33 seconds remaining to put Evansville up 50-48. On the next possession, the Shockers finally found Murry in the final 10 seconds for the game-winner from the left wing,
"We defended much better today," said UE Coach Marty Simmons, "and I'm proud of the effort our guys showed. But we kept giving them hope and giving them hope, and you just can't do that."
Ely was the only Evansville player in double figures, with 17. The Aces shot only 36 percent, hitting 18 of 50 shots including three of 12 three-pointers. Murry led the Shockers with 15 and Durley added 10 as Wichita won its third in a row after losing six straight MVC games. Wichita hit 16 of 43 shots. The three-pointer by Murry to win it was just the second three in 15 attempts for the Shockers.
