EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The hottest team in men's soccer in the Missouri Valley Conference stayed that way Wednesday night. Johannes Demarzi scored the only goal of the match at 61:01 as Missouri State won its fourth consecutive match and improved to 4-0 in conference road games with a 1-0 win over the University of Evansville at UE's Black Beauty Field.
The Bears are 9-3-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the MVC, in second place behind 4-1-0 Drake. Evansville is now 9-5-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the league going into Friday night's home match against Drake in the Fox Soccer Channel National Game of the Week.
Demarzi's goal was set up after UE was called for a hand ball just outside the penalty area. Demarzi hooked a hard shot between players and past the reach of goalkeeper Phil Boerger for the only score of the night. Evansville went on the attack and produced eight corner kicks in the second half alone, but Missouri State goalkeeper Alex Riggs made three saves and two of his defenders saved a header from Justin Sass late in the contest just before the ball crossed the goal line.
Missouri State finished with 13 shots and Evansville 11. Both put four on goal, with Sass, Tom Irvin, Jarrett Robbins and Sam Bornstein producing UE's shots on goal.
