The 2009-10 women’s basketball season will officially tip off on Friday night for the University of Evansville, as the Purple Aces will host the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers at Roberts Stadium. Friday’s game is set for 7:00 p.m. and can be heard live on 91.5 F.M.-WUEV and can be seen live on-line on AcesTV.
Friday’s match-up will pit a pair of new-look teams against one another, as both UE and Wisconsin-Milwaukee return just two starters from last year’s squads and both teams welcome in six newcomers this season.
Evansville was able to escape Milwaukee with a 62-61 overtime victory over the Panthers last December behind a team-high 17-point performance by current senior guard
Amy Gallagher. Current junior forward
Stephanie Bamberger also netted 10 points for UE, which was able to survive a last-second shot by the Panthers in the lane to pick up the victory.
The Purple Aces will enter Friday’s match-up off of last Saturday’s 81-65 exhibition victory over Oakland City. In its only exhibition game of the year, Evansville showed good balance, as all 12 Purple Aces scored before halftime, with 10 of the 12 players recording at least five points in the contest. Freshman guard
Kaylan Martin led the way with 12 points, while sophomores
Chelsea Falkenstein and
Eva Benson chipped in 11 and 10 points each.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee will enter Friday’s game off of a 1-1 exhibition campaign. The Panthers dropped a last-second 57-56 decision to Wisconsin-Parkside to open the exhibition season, before bouncing back with a 66-57 win over Wisconsin-Stevens Point on November 5. Junior forward Lindsay Laur, who had a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double against UE last December, averaged 12.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in the two exhibition games for the Panthers. Junior guard Ashley Imperiale also netted 19 points in Milwaukee’s win over Stevens Point.
Friday’s game will be Yoplait Pink Lid Collection Night at Roberts Stadium. For every pink lid collected from Yoplait yogurt products, Yoplait will donate 10 cents to Susan G. Koman for the Cure to help aid in breast cancer research through the company’s Save Lids To Save Lives annual drive. Tickets for Friday’s contest at $7 for adults and $5 for youth (17 and under) and seniors (65 and over).
