Aces Roll Over Competition At IUPUI Invite

INDIANAPOLIS—The University of Evansville swimming and diving team rolled over its competition at the IUPUI Invite on Sunday, as the women’s team swept Butler (119-19), IUPUI (114-24) and Xavier (89-49) and the men’s team defeated IUPUI (187-89) but fell to Xavier (154-118).

“I am very pleased with the way that we competed,” said Evansville head coach Rickey Perkins. “We had two diver make Zone, so that is huge for us. I am very happy with how we showed up, and I hope we can continue carrying this success into the rest of our season.”

Freshman Sadie Wells set a new school record on the 3-meter diving board after scoring 280.60, which broke the mark of 255.85 by Megan Kelly in the 1995-96 season. Junior Andy Balczo also had a big day on the boards after he won the 1 meter with a score of 303.80.

The women took 10 of the top spots during the meet with three swimmers earning the first-place finish twice. Junior Christina Schmidgall won the 500 and 1650 free, sophomore Hannah Quast won the 100 and 200 free, and freshman Michea Reinitz won the 50 free and 100 fly. Junior Diane Threlkeld took first in the 100 back followed by Alex Howard in second. Freshman Jill Enge placed first in the 100 breast while sophomore Alex Spata earned first and senior Ady Sekely took second in the 200 fly. The team also took the top time in the 800 free relay.

The men’s team also had several top finishes throughout the day, as the Aces opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. Freshman Alex Seward placed first in the 100 and 200 fly and second in the 100 free. Sophomore Jake Harrington took first in the 50 free. Sophomore Colin Gray placed second in the 100 breast and third in the 200 breast. Freshman Kyle Tiemann earned third in the 200 and 500 free while sophomore Chris Nash took the three spot in the 100 and 200 back. Freshman Justin Shotwell also took third in the 200 IM.

The Aces take some time off from competition before returning to the pool November 21-22 in St. Louis to participate in the Washington University Invite. It will be the last meet before the holiday seasons.
