EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Freshman point guard Kaylan Martin paced a balanced University of Evansville scoring attack Saturday night with 12 points, as the Purple Aces overcame a slow start to post an 81-65 exhibition victory over the visiting Oakland City University Lady Oaks at Roberts Stadium in Evansville.
Martin was one of three Purple Aces to reach double-figures, as she scored 12 points and tied for game-high honors with three steals, while going a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Sophomore forwards Chelsea Falkenstein and Eva Benson joined Martin in double-digits with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Martin and Falkenstein helped UE overcome an early 12-0 run by the Lady Oaks, as they scored six points each during a 24-7 UE spurt eight minutes into the half. Falkenstein scored six-straight points in under a two-minute span to start the run, and Martin kept it going with a lay-up which gave UE the lead for good with 9:49 to play, and four of her eight free throws . Evansville would eventually take a 39-29 lead into the halftime locker room, as UE’s balance was evident early, with all 12 Purple Aces scoring in the opening 20 minutes of play.
In the second half, UE turned up its defensive pressure to force 20 second-half turnovers, which they turned into 21 points to build as large as a 21-point cushion. OCU’s Samantha Stahl and Kristi McVey would keep the Lady Oaks within striking distance, as they combined for 39 points, but the 33 total turnovers proved too much to overcome for the visitors.
On the night, Stahl led all scorers with 21 points, while McVey pitched in 18 points for the Lady Oaks. For Evansville, 10 of its 12 players scored five points or more for head coach Misty Murphy, while the Purple Aces shot 42.5 percent from the floor (31-for-73). UE also held Oakland City to just 36.4 percent shooting from the floor (16-for-44) while forcing 33 turnovers on 19 steals.
Evansville will open the 2009-10 regular-season on Friday night, November 13 as the Purple Aces will host the Panthers of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. Friday’s game will be Yoplait Pink Lid Collection Night, as for every Yoplait Pink Lid collected, Yoplait will donate 10 cents to Susan G. Koman for the Cure to aid in the first against breast cancer.
