Five former University of Evansville standouts who have gone on to distinguish themselves following their athletic careers will be inducted into the UE Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday, January 16.

The Class of 2010 includes Joe Gengelbach (football), Rory Hennings (football, track & field), Just Jensen (men’s soccer), Bob Walker (basketball) and Angie Werne Lensing (women’s soccer). The five will be honored at an 11:30 a.m. luncheon on January 16 at the Ridgway University Center on the University of Evansville campus. Reservations can be made beginning today by calling the athletics department at (812) 488-ACES.

Joe Gengelbach was an outstanding football lineman for the Aces for three years in the late ‘60s. The native of Tell City, Ind. became a teacher and coach at nearby North Posey High School immediately after graduating from UE in 1969, and has been there ever since. After one year as assistant football coach, Gengelbach assumed the head coaching position in 1970. In his 40 years as head coach, the Vikings have produced a record of 232-185-1, with four sectional championships, four regional championships, and a semistate championship in 2005 when North Posey set a school record with 12 victories and finished as the Class 2A runnerup. North Posey has also won five Pocket Athletic Conference championships, most recently in 2008. Gengelbach also served as athletics director at NPHS from 1980-1995. He is a member of the Indiana Football Hall of Fame, past president of the Indiana Football Coaches Association, 2008 recipient of the Charles F. Maas Distinguished Service Award from the Indiana High School Athletic Association, and currently serves as Region 9 Ethics Chairman. Joe and his wife Shannon, have two children, Mike and Mark, and five grandchildren.

Rory Hennings set Indiana Collegiate Conference and University of Evansville records in the 60-, 100-, 200- and 300-yard dashes, and set the Heartland Collegiate Conference 200-meter dash record of :21.5 in 1979. He was UE’s nominee in both 1978 and 1979 for the Tony Hinkle Award, presented annually to the Heartland Collegiate Conference’s most outstanding scholar-athlete. In football, Hennings led the ICC in kickoff return yardage as a junior and punt return yardage as a senior. He also set the school record for the longest pass reception–91 yards against Indiana Central in 1977. Hennings signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1979, and scored the winning touchdown for the Chiefs in a rookie/free agent pre-season game against the Houston Oilers. Hennings has been a marketing and banking executive for nearly three decades, and is currently with National City Mortgage in St. Louis. He is also active in the UE Alumni Association. Hennings resides in Florissant, Mo. with his wife, Nedra, and daughter, Tiffany. They also have a son, Rory, who is a freshman at Southeast Missouri State University.

Just Jensen was part of the University of Evansville’s first class of All-America soccer players, in 1982 along with teammate John Nunes. Both were second team All-Americans as chosen by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Jensen is the only player in UE history chosen for the NSCAA All-Region team four consecutive years, from 1979 through 1982. He was a member of the Under-18 National Team pool in his native Denmark, and was the Aces’ Most Valuable Player in 1980. Jensen helped lead the 1982 Aces to their first NCAA Tournament appearance and a 15-3-4 record. He ranks 15th on UE’s all-time scoring list with 19 goals and 20 assists for 58 points. Jensen and his wife of 25 years, Inge-Lise, reside in Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska, located above the Arctic Circle on Alaska’s North Slope. For the past 17 years, Just has taught all subjects to junior high school-aged Inupiaq Eskimo students. He has also been a teacher and youth coach in the Aleutian Islands, and served four years as a mentor for new teachers in the Arctic. Jensen has also worked for the past 10 years as a National Park Service volunteer at Gates of the Arctic National Park. He became an American citizen in 2008.

Following an outstanding basketball career at Evansville Central High School, Bob Walker joined the Aces of Coach Arad McCutchan. He earned all-Indiana Collegiate Conference honors in 1955 and 1956, received the Kiwanis Award for athletic and academic achievement as a senior in 1956, and finished his career as one of the top 20 scorers in Evansville College history with 1,044 points. Walker currently ranks 39th on the Aces’ all-time scoring list. Following graduation, Walker embarked on a 39-year teaching and coaching career that included 34 years as a teacher and 22 years as a coach at Evansville North High School. In seven years as the Huskies’ varsity head coach (1977-78 through 1983-84) and 15 years as reserve team and assistant coach, Walker’s teams compiled a record of 296-141. He was an assistant coach on North’s 1967 state championship team, and was chosen as Evansville Coach of the Year in 1978, 1979 and 1980. A member of the Evansville North High School Hall of Fame, Walker in 2007 at age 73 played for the winning gold medal basketball team at the National Senior Olympics. Bob and his wife, Shiela, have three children–Mindy Walker, Cindy Davis and Kent Walker–and six grandchildren.

Angie Werne Lensing was the Great Midwest Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Year in 1994, when she led the 11-6-4 Purple Aces to a conference championship in just the second year of the program’s existence. She was also the first women’s soccer player to earn the Ida M. Stieler Award, presented annually to UE’s most outstanding female athlete. Lensing became a physical education and health teacher at Evansville Memorial High School in 1996, and took over as head coach of the girls’ soccer team in 1999. In the past 11 years with Lensing as head coach, the Tigers have compiled a 162-52-17 record. They were state champions in 2008, and were ranked #18 nationally in the NSCAA National Top Twenty Five High School Girls Poll. Under Lensing, Memorial has won seven conference titles, seven sectional championships, six regionals and five semistate titles, including three of the last four. Lensing was chosen as the state Coach of the Year in 2008, and has been District Coach of the Year in 2000, 2001, 2006 and 2008. She is also active as a coach in the Evansville Soccer Club. Angie and her husband, Bill, have four children–Austin, Jacob, Grace and Hope.

Now in its 38th year, the UE Athletics Hall of Fame will include 202 members with the induction of the class of 2010. Inductees are chosen each fall by an 11-person committee that includes current and former University of Evansville administrators, coaches and a media representative.
