A second-half surge from the University of Evansville women’s basketball team seemed to be the trick up the Aces’ sleeve against Ball State (5-6) Tuesday night, as the Aces (3-8) were led by senior Amy Gallagher to a 73-67 win at Roberts Stadium.

Gallagher scored 20 of her 29 points in the second half to set a new career high for the Nebraska native. Freshman Samantha Heck posted 10 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots. Senior Hannah Singleton recorded a career-high nine points while junior Stephanie Bamberger added eight points and two steals.

As a team, the Aces put in 40 points from the frontcourt compared to 20 points by the Cardinals. UE also capitalized by turning Ball State’s 21 turnovers into 20 points.

A Gallagher basket started the game and helped UE to a quick 4-3 lead. However, Ball State regained ground with a scoring run to go up 13-4. The Aces answered with a 22-14 run, including two three-point shots from Bamberger and one apiece from Jordan Lewis and Gallagher, to put the Cardinals’ lead at 27-26. UE then grabbed a 28-27 advantage before trading points with Ball State. A visitor lay-up with nine seconds left had the teams going into the locker room with Ball State ahead 35-34.

UE opened the second half behind power shooting to go out to a 52-41 lead, as they outscored Ball State 18-6 and held the Cardinals without a point or field goal for just over five minutes.  Ball State then put together a 6-0 run to get with 52-47 before closing the gap at five with a score of 64-59. The Aces were able to seal the win, though, with late free throws to get its third victory of the season.

The Aces get a 12-day break from competition before opening the new year with conference play at Southern Illinois on Saturday, January 2 at 2:05 p.m.
