STARKVILLE, Miss.—The University of Evansville softball team won the consolation game over Rutgers on Sunday in the final day of the Mississippi State Bulldog Classic. The game went into extra innings with the Aces topping the Scarlet Knights, 2-1, in eight innings.
For their efforts, Krista Price, Jennifer Stahlhut, and Kristen Shirk were named to the all-tournament team.
The Aces started off strong, scoring a run in the first inning with Price and Stahlhut. Price led off the game with a walk and stole second. Stahlhut drove in Price with a double to left center to give the team a 1-0 lead.
The Scarlet Knights were able to tie the game with a solo home run in the third inning, but the Aces were able to take advantage of an extra inning to take the win. Jennifer McKee was placed on second to start the eighth inning and advanced to third on sacrifice bunt by Kelci Alsip. Price drove in the go ahead run with a single through the middle to give the Aces the lead and the eventual win.
Freshman Annie Vincelett had a strong showing in her first career collegiate start, going five innings and giving up one run on three hits with two strikeouts. McKee picked up the win, pitching three innings and giving up a hit while striking out three.
The Aces had four hits in the game behind a 2-for-4 performance by Jennifer Stahlhut. Price and Fehlman had the other two hits while Stahlhut and Price were credited with the two RBI in the game.
The Aces (3-5) will travel to Memphis, Tenn. next weekend for the Blues City Classic. They will meet Southeast Missouri State in their first game on Saturday at 9 a.m.
