DURHAM, N.C. -- Justin Sass, Kieran Purcell and Tyler Kincaid scored goals here Sunday as the University of Evansville men's soccer team stunned perennial ACC power Duke 3-0 in men's soccer. The Purple Aces outshot the the Blue Devils 12-3.
The abbreviated spring season in men's soccer includes players already enrolled who will be eligible for the 2009 fall season.
"Last season, this group grew up as a team, and we now have a nucleus of players who know how to compete at the highest level," said head coach Mike Jacobs, who has 18 letterwinners returning from last season's squad. "We still have a lot of youth. We started seven freshmen and three sophomores today. With the experience that our players gained last fall against nationally ranked teams, I can see the improvement we've made, especially defensively."
The Aces have now outscored their two opponents this year 5-0. UE beat Bellarmine 2-0 last week in its opening game. Evansville plays two matches Tuesday on its spring break road trip, taking on UNC-Wilmington and Cape Fear Community College at Wilmington, N.C.
