New head coach
Wes Carroll has already seen improvement from his University of Evansville baseball team, and he's expecting more this weekend when the Purple Aces host the Dunn Hospitality Classic II at Braun Stadium on the UE campus.
The tournament schedule (all times central):
Friday:
Purdue vs. Mississippi Valley State, 11:00 a.m.
IPFW vs. UE, 3:00 p.m.
Saturday:
IPFW vs. Mississippi Valley State, 11:00 a.m.
Purdue vs. UE, 3:00 p.m.
Sunday:
IPFW vs. Purdue, 11:00 a.m.
Mississippi Valley State vs. UE, 3:00 p.m.
Carroll will go with senior
John Foley, junior
Wade Kapteyn and sophomore
Zach Taylor as his starting pitchers this weekend. Kapteyn earned his second award of the week on Tuesday when he was named the Pro-Line Athletic National Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). Kapteyn, also named the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday, went 2-0 with a perfect 0.00 ERA last week after tossing 11 consecutive scoreless innings in two starts against Cal State Northridge and No. 10 Pepperdine.
"I'm ready to get back on our home diamond, and anxious to see if we have carryover from our spring trip," Carroll said. "We pitched well, we fielded well at times, and best of all, we competed at a very high level last weekend. There were two times I was very proud of our guys. The first was the second game against Northridge when they scored four runs in the first inning against us. Last year, we would have lost that game 15-2. This year, we came back and it ended up being a 9-8 game. The other was after Pepperdine beat us 15-5. It could have been a bloodbath the next day, but we came out ready to play at 10 in the morning, and we beat them 2-0. I expect our guys to bring the same kind of effort this weekend."
Reliever #J.R. Carbonell# leads the staff with a 2.45 earned run average in 11 innings, followed by Kapteyn's 3.07. Sophomore third baseman
Cody Fick has hit safely in all 11 games, and brings a .447 batting average into Friday's game against IPFW, with 17 basehits in 38 at-bats. Three other regulars are at .333 or better, including outfielder
Nate Smith (.353), 1st baseman/catcher
Andy Pascoe (.341) and outfielder
Alex Acheson (.333).
