Aces Come Up Just Short Once Again

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Evansville softball team hung with No. 25 Southern Illinois in a doubleheader on Tuesday at Cooper Stadium. The Salukis erupted for three runs in the top of the eighth inning to take the first game and got a two-out hit in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game to win 5-4.

Game 1
Freshman Kylie Wagner had another strong showing in the circle as she pitched a strong seven scoreless innings.

Katie McNamara worked five scoreless innings for the Salukis giving up just three hits with six strikeouts. Nikki Waters picked up the win in three innings of scoreless work with four strikeouts as the two combined to shut out the Aces, 3-0.

The Aces had their best scoring opportunity in the sixth. Jamie Lindauer led off the inning with a pinch hit walk. Krista Price followed by beating out an infield bunt, and Kristen Shirk was hit to load the bases but the Aces could not advance the runners as the Salukis ended the scoring threat with a popout.

The Salukis got the first run of the game with an RBI single by Chelsea Held and Katie Wagner capped off the game with a two-run single to give the Salukis a 3-0 lead.

Price had two of the Aces’ three hits and had a stolen base in the game. Kylie Wagner had the only other hit for the Aces’ offense.

Game 2
The second game was a much different style of play from the first game. The first game was a pitching duel while the two teams combined for seven errors in the second game.

Southern Illinois took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and nearly batted around as they scored three runs on two hits, two errors and a walk. They would extend the lead to four runs with a RBI hit by Alicia Junker in the third inning.

The Aces got on the board in the bottom of the third inning, taking advantage of three Salukis’ errors and a RBI double by Jen Stahlhut to put up two runs. The Aces tied the game in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Price and a single by Wagner to score Stahlhut.

The Salukis got the run they needed to take the game with a home run by senior catcher Jayme Wamsley to take a 5-4 lead.

The Aces had five hits in the game behind two hit games from Stahlhut and Wagner. Price’s home run was the fifth hit, while Price, Shirk, Stahlhut, and Wagner all had a RBI in the game.

Waters took the win in the second game, going 2.1 innings and allowing just two hits. Danielle Glosson pitched 4.2 innings and gave up two earned runs on three hits.

Wagner was tagged with the loss, pitching 4.1 innings and giving up a run on three hits with three strikeouts. Annie Vincelett started the game and gave five hits and four unearned runs.

The Aces will host Butler for a non-conference midweek doubleheader on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Cooper Stadium.
