EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Evansville softball senior Kristen Shirk handed head coach Gwen Lewis her 500th career win with a walk off home run in the ninth inning as the Aces downed Indiana 4-3 on Wednesday at Cooper Stadium.
“It’s kind of unique,” said Lewis. “I’ve been here basically my whole career. I’m committed to Evansville. This memorable win couldn’t have come against a better team.”
Freshman Kylie Wagner had a one-hitter going through the first five innings of the game but the Hoosiers rallied for three runs, one earned, in the top of the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings.
Shirk scored the first run of the game by getting hit, advancing to second on a groundout, reaching third on a passed ball, and scoring on a single by Wagner. Jen Stahlhut drove in Krista Price for the second run of the game. Annie Vincelett gave the Aces a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning with her first collegiate home run.
Indiana put up three runs in the top of the seventh. Sara Olson led off the inning with a home run. After two outs in the inning, Emily Bergeson tied the game with a two-run single.
Shirk won the game taking Olson deep to left center to win the game.
Wagner went the distance for the Aces, picking up the win in nine innings giving up one earned run on six hits with six strikeouts. She led the team at the plate with three hits and a RBI.
Shirk, Stahlhut, and Vincelett each had two hits in the game and Price, Ockomon, and Fehlman each had a hit in the Aces’ 12 hit day.
The Aces (8-18, 0-8) will play at Western Kentucky tomorrow before returning home to host Wichita State and Northern Iowa for the weekend.
