The University of Evansville softball team will finish out the week by playing six games in four days against three different teams.
The Aces will travel to Western Kentucky for a game before returning to Evansville to host Wichita State on Friday and Northern Iowa for the weekend. Following Saturday’s noon doubleheader with Northern Iowa, the Aces will have “Dessert In The Dirt.” Each player and coach will be serving up one of their own dessert specialties in a souvenir Aces batting helmet.
The Aces are coming off a 4-3 win over Indiana on Wednesday with a walk-off home run by senior Kristen Shirk in the bottom of the ninth inning that gave head coach Gwen Lewis her 500th career win. Krista Price returned behind the plate in Wednesday’s game and leads the team hitting .394 with five home runs and 12 RBI.
The Aces and Shockers will attempt to make up two of the games that were cancelled due to winter weather over the weekend. The two will meet in a doubleheader on Friday at Cooper Stadium beginning at 1 p.m. The Shockers last played on March 26 when they split a doubleheader with Missouri State. Heather Gerritse batting .413 with two home runs and 22 RBI leads the team.
The Aces will conclude the week with a three-game conference series with Northern Iowa. The Panthers are 5-3 in the conference after dropping a doubleheader to Bradley on Wednesday. The team has the best RPI (23) in the Missouri Valley Conference and are led offensively by Megan Machovec hitting .407 with six doubles, three triples, and seven RBI.
Thursday’s game can be heard live on 91.5-F.M. WUEV. Live stats will be available for the Wichita State and Northern Iowa games. AcesTV live video streaming will cover Saturday’s doubleheader.
