The University of Evansville baseball team will wrap up its current five-game road trip this week, as the Purple Aces will travel to Southeast Missouri State and Kentucky for a pair of mid-week games. UE will square off with SEMO on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., before traveling to Kentucky on Wednesday night for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
Evansville will bring an 18-19 overall record into this week’s action, after winning two out of three games at Bradley over the weekend. The Purple Aces have won five out of the last six contests, and have won 10 out of the last 15 games overall thanks to a strong April effort by the UE pitching staff. So far in 14 April games, the UE pitching staff has combined to post a 9-5 record and 3.96 ERA in 125.0 innings of work. Over the last six games, UE’s pitchers have been even better, posting a 3.33 staff ERA while striking out 49 men in 54.0 innings of work.
Offensively, senior outfielder Jim Viscomi has been UE’s hottest hitter of late, as he has hit .478 (11-for-23) during UE’s stretch of five wins in six contests, while knocking three doubles with four RBI, seven runs scored, and five stolen bases. Viscomi has hit a team-best .405 overall during the month of April to raise his season batting average to .289 overall. Sophomore third baseman Cody Fick continues to pace the UE offense with a .329 batting average, six home runs, and 30 RBI.
Southeast Missouri State will bring a 22-14 overall record into Tuesday’s contest in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, after sweeping a rain-shortened three-game series from Southern Illinois-Edwardsville over the weekend. The Redhawks currently stand in second place in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 9-3 league record, and are led offensively by senior outfielder Tyrell Cummings’ .375 average. The Redhawks will pose a tough challenge for UE’s pitching staff, as SEMO has hit .304 as a team so far this year with 47 home runs in 36 games.
Kentucky will enter this week’s action with a 21-17 overall record after winning two out of three games at Mississippi State over the weekend. Sophomore infielder Chris Bisson currently leads a potent UK offense with a .401 average and 41 RBI, as the Wildcats have hit .297 overall with 33 home runs this season. The UK lineup also features someone UE is very familiar with in freshman infielder and pitcher Braden Kapteyn, the younger brother of UE junior pitcher Wade Kapteyn. Braden is currently hitting .300 for the Wildcats, while also boasting a 3-0 record and three saves on the mound.
