TERRE HAUTE, Ind.--The University of Evansville softball team was held to just one run as the Indiana State Sycamores powered shut out the team, 8-0, in the first game and slipped by with a 2-1 victory in the second game at Price Field on Saturday.
Game 1
Indiana State’s Darcy Wood shut out the Aces, 8-0, and gave up just two hits in five innings as she improved to 9-12 for the season and gave the Sycamores their seventh conference win.
The Sycamores struck for two runs with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. Katie Armour, the league-leader in batting average, hit a two-out single and advanced to third on a short pop fly that was dropped. Audrey Childress and Sam Markowski hit back-to-back RBI singles to put the Sycamores up 2-0.
The Aces led off the second inning by getting their first two batters aboard. Kylie Wagner was hit and Amanda Ockomon was awarded first base on a catcher’s interference, but the Aces were unable to move the runners.
Armour picked up two RBI in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run single with the bases loaded to score Meredith Simpson and Stephanie Robinson.
The Aces put two more base runners on in the fourth inning as Wagner had one of the Aces’ two hits in the game to lead off the inning, and Jamie Lindauer drew a one-out walk, but Wood ended the threat and struck out the side.
The Sycamores scored two runs in each inning with the exception of the third as they put up two in the fourth and two in the fifth to close out the game. Simpson ended the game with a two-out double to drive in two runs.
Despite having just two hits in the game, the Aces left six base runners in the game. Wagner and Krista Price had the base hits for the team.
Wagner took the loss, tossing an inning and a third and giving up two earned runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout. Annie Vincelett finished the game, pitching three and a third innings and giving up two earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
Wood picked up the win going five innings and giving up two hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
Game 2
The Aces took an early lead in the second game of the doubleheader, but the Sycamores came back with a run in the third and one in the fourth to slip past the Aces, 2-1.
Indiana State had the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning but Britt Boyer hit into a double play and Jen McKee got Childress to pop out to end the threat. The double play was the 20th for the Aces this season, which leads the conference.
Two walks put runners at first and second for the Aces in the second inning. Freshman Allison Aguilera drove in the lone run of the day for the Aces with a RBI single through the right side to put the Aces up 1-0.
After a double by Simpson, a sacrifice bunt, and an intentional walk to Armour, Boyer tied the game, 1-1, with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
The Aces had their best chance to score in the fourth inning. They took advantage of a single by Lindauer and two Sycamore misplays to load the bases with one out, but Indiana State’s pitching came to the rescue again and got a strikeouts and a groundout to end the inning.
Alyssa Marcum had the eventual winning RBI with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth inning that allowed pinch runner Rachel McCleary to score from third.
In the second game, the Aces had three hits and left nine on base. Jen Stahlhut, Lindauer, and Aguilera had the hits for the Aces.
McKee was tagged with the loss, going six innings and giving up two runs on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
Meagan Mccurdy picked up the win in five innings with one run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Wood picked up her second save of the season, tossing two innings and giving up a walk with four strikeouts.
The Aces (12-30, 3-16) will return to Evansville to host Austin Peay in a midweek doubleheader on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Cooper Stadium.
