EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Evansville swimming and diving team took part in celebrating 2009 as the 40th Anniversary of Special Olympics Indiana. The Aces hosted the Aquatics Sectional for Areas 7 and 10 of Special Olympics Indiana on Saturday, April 25 at Wyttenbach Pool in its annual volunteer project.

“It was a good time,” said UE’s head coach Rickey Perkins. “It is a special time for us as a team, and we get to see these athletes enjoying what they do.”

Members of the UE team assisted in putting on the event that featured around 70 Special Olympics athletes from Vanderburgh and Dubois counties.

“They work so hard and train for this,” said junior Nicky Lodewyk. “It’s a different and fun experience for us as a team. I think we have as much fun as they do.”

The team served as the host and did everything from registering the athletes, to announcing the races, and timing the individual events. They also stood along the pool deck and cheered on the athletes and had a special awards presentation following the meet.
