University of Evansville softball player Lissa Fehlman (Elgin, Ill. / St. Edward Central Catholic) has been chosen as one of 10 recipients of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Good Neighbor Award for her efforts both on and off the field.

Fehlman held a 3.76 grade-point-average in interdisciplinary studies and has been named to the Dean’s list and the Student-Athlete Honor Roll for six consecutive semesters. She is also a two-time recipient of the MVC Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award and was one of three seniors for the Aces this season. She was named to the 2009 MVC Scholar-Athlete first-team this season after receiving an honorable mention in 2008.

Earlier this year, Fehlman was chosen as one of 30 candidates nationwide for the prestigious Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award and was part of a team that was named a NFCA Girls Got Game Top 10 Academic Team.

Fehlman is also a member of the Student-Athlete Academic Advisory where she is involved in Just Read, which is a program that gives student-athletes a way to promote reading in schools.

Fehlman initiated and serves as the president of the chapter of Students with Ailing Mothers and Fathers at UE. She also helped organize a colon cancer awareness event and helped coordinate a fundraiser for Special Olympics at softball games this year.

Among her many other extracurricular activities, Fehlman also participated as a Salvation Army Bell Ringer, Toys for Tots, and Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition.   The Valley recognizes 10 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, spring), for a total of 30 honorees.
