Soccer Team Looking For Revenge Sunday

9/19/2009 1:13:18 PM

University of Evansville soccer coach Mike Jacobs has a longtime friendship with fellow New Yorker and Stony Brook University head coach Cesar Markovic. But Jacobs and his Purple Aces are also looking for revenge Sunday when the two meet in the final round of the 22nd ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic at Black Beauty Field at Arad McCutchan Stadium. Stony Brook shut out the Aces 1-0 in the final round of the Aces Soccer Classic in 2006, ending a five-match Evansville win streak and preventing the Aces from winning their own tournament. UE takes a three-match win streak and 4-2-0 overall record into Sunday's 2:30 contest after beating IUPUI 1-0 in the first round Friday night on Mike Luttrull's goal in the 80th minute. Eastern Illinois, which beat Stony Brook 2-0 Friday, takes on IUPUI in Sunday's opening match at 12:00. “We're excited about our strong performance against IUPUI," Jacobs says. "I know that we will need to continue our form against an opponent the quality of Stony Brook. We have a lot of respect for their program and coaching staff, and expect a battle. Defending our ProRehab Aces Classic title, as well as defending McCutchan Stadium, is a priority for our team.” Stony Brook is just 1-5-1, but the Seawolves' tie came against the nation's fourth ranked team, St. John's, on St. John's home turf Sept. 11. The Aces won the ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic last year, giving UE its sixth title in the event's 21 years.
