University of Evansville women’s basketball player Staci Gillum has been named the Missouri Valley Conference’s Newcomer of the Week, as announced by the league office today.

In her Evansville debut, Gillum, a transfer from Kirkwood Community College, made a huge impact in UE’s 63-62 season-opening victory over defending Mid-American Conference champion Bowling Green. Gillum sparked the Aces’ 16-0 lead with two baskets in the opening minutes, and then kept Evansville’s momentum going as the Falcons threatened in the second half. With 3:35 left, Gillum hit a free throw and a three-pointer to put the Aces up 56-55. She was fouled and hit both free throws with 1:22 to play to give the Aces the lead for good at 61-60. Gillum finished with 12 points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals in 31 minutes on the floor.

The Aces are home again Wednesday, hosting Murray State at 5:00 p.m. CST at Roberts Stadium. Afterwards, the men play UTSA with a start time slated for 7:35 p.m.
