The University of Evansville women’s basketball team looks to keep the momentum going from Friday’s thrilling victory over Bowling Green when the Aces host Murray State Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. CST at Roberts Stadium. The men’s team will play afterwards against UTSA at 7:35 p.m.
Murray State comes into the midweek match-up 2-0 with wins over St. Catharine (78-59) and Mid-Continent (76-54). A young squad, the Racers are one of seven NCAA Division I programs in the country that do not have any seniors on the roster. They are led by juniors Rachael Isom and Mallory Schwab, averaging 12.0 and 10.0 points, respectively, on the year.
“Murray State can be a dangerous team when they have their transition game going and when they are able to create perimeter shots from dribble penetration,” said coach Misty Murphy. “Right now, both programs are shooting well from the three-point line. They may be a little quicker on the perimeter at times, but we have the advantage with our low block game.”
UE’s post game has been strong this season with forward Chelsea Falkenstein recording a near double-double with nine rebounds and a career-high 17 points in the game against BGSU, while Samantha Heck tallied seven points and four rebounds, while dishing out seven assists from the high-post.
“It will be important for us to dictate the pace of the game,” said Murphy. “Our defensive transition and containment of dribble penetration are key factors. We need to execute on the offensive end to get high percentage shots.”
The way the Aces have been playing, anywhere on the court could be a high percentage shot, shooting 61.1 % from beyond the three-point line and 46.8% from the field. In UE’s exhibition game versus Oakland City and against Bowling Green, the Aces made 11 threes in each contest. Junior Jordan Lewis leads the squad with three treys in the regular season, all coming within the first five minutes of last weekend’s win.
Fans who bring a canned food to donate Wednesday will receive $5 off their ticket price. It is also Camper Reunion Night and Take a Kid to a Game Day where kids get in free with a paid adult.
