BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- The University of Evansville swimming & diving team saw a successful first day of events at the Hilltopper Invitational.
“It was just a great first day,” said head coach Rickey Perkins. “We had a lot of best times and some impressive performances. Our team spirit is just awesome right now.
“Our performances are a very good indicator of where we are with our training right now,” Perkins continued, “so I’m very pleased with the results.”
For the men, both relays team set new season-bests. The 200-free relay team of Jake Harrington, Alex Seward, Will Spradley and Kyle Tiemann finished in fifth place with a season-best time of 1:27.20. Chris Nash, Justin Shotwell, Ryan Metzger and Will Spradley made up the 400-medley relay team that set a new season-best time of 3:38.92.
For the women, Alex Howard broke the school record for the 100-yard backstroke during the first leg of the 400-medley relay. Howard’s time of 58.15 broke the previous record of 58.22 set by Erin Amazon in 2001 and tied by Howard earlier this season.
Howard also took a third place finish in the 200-IM with a time of 2:08.64. Michea Reinitz took second place in the 50-free with a time of 24.33 while Christina Schmidgall finished third in the 500-freestyle with a time of 5:06.33. The 200-free relay took second place with a time of 1:38.36 while the 400-medley team finished in third at 3:56.64.
The Aces return to action tomorrow morning with day two of preliminaries and finals at the Hilltopper Invitational.
