The University of Evansville women’s basketball team looks to keep their undefeated season alive when the Aces travel to Ball State Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 5:00 p.m. CST at Worthen Arena in Muncie, Ind. Fans can listen to a live broadcast of the game on WUEV-91.5FM at wuev.evansville.edu.
The Aces (2-0) enter Saturday’s game riding a two-game win streak, topping Bowling Green last week, 63-62, and Murray State, 60-54, on Wednesday. Junior Chelsea Falkenstein has been the Aces’ leading scorer in both contests, scoring 17 in the season-opener and 16 versus the Racers. Briyana Blair stepped up in the most recent win, netting 12 points. Classmates Jordan Lewis (9.5 ppg) and Staci Gillum (8.5 ppg), have also been consistent contributors this season
Ball State (1-2) suffered an 81-66 loss to Indiana in their season-opener before topping Wright State, 64-63, last Sunday. Most recently, the Cardinals fell to Detroit Mercy, 78-60, on Tuesday. Emily Maggert leads the squad, averaging a double-double (16.3 ppg, 11.7 rpg), while Suzanne Grossnickle has averaged 12.0 ppg and 6.0 rpg.
A UE WIN WOULD…
Make UE 3-0 and give the Aces their best start since the 1997-98 season … Improve coach
Misty Murphy’s record to 22-45 at UE and 130-110 overall … Make UE 436-527 all-time.
A UE LOSS WOULD…
Make UE 2-1 … Drop coach Murphy’s record at UE to 21-46 and 129-111 overall … Make UE 435-528 all-time.
JUNIOR ACHIEVERS
The entire junior class has been making huge contributions through the first two games. Chelsea Falkenstein (16.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg), Jordan Lewis (9.5 ppg), and Staci Gillum (8.5 ppg, 9 assists) are the Aces’ three leading scorers, while Briyana Blair scored 12 points in UE’s win over Murray State.
TREY BIEN
Shooting 40.0% (14-of-35) from three-point range, the Aces rank first in the Missouri Valley Conference.
YOU’RE HOT AND YOU’RE COLD
In their season-opening win over Bowling Green the Aces shot 11-for-18 from behind the arc. The 61.1% performance was the best Evansville has shot for three since Dec. 8, 2009’s game vs. Lipscomb, in which the Aces shot 60.0%. In the UE’s most recent game vs. Murray State, the Aces made just 3-of-17 three’s (17.6%).
THIRD TIMES A CHARM
Just like last season when the Aces played Ball State, UE is looking for its third win of the season. The difference is, Evansville is playing just its third game of this season this time, while they were on Game 11 last year.
WHAT THE HECK?
Sophomore
Samantha Heck tallied a career-high 10 rebounds vs. Murray State, while also scoring nine points. She averages 8.0 ppg and leads the squad and the MVC with 11 assists on the year, often connecting with Falkenstein on high-low entries. Against Bowling Green, Heck scored seven points and dished out seven assists, including three straight to Falkenstein to hold off the Racers in the second half.
BAM!
Lone senior Stephanie Bamberger is the Aces’ fifth-leading scorer, averaging 7.5 ppg. However, much of Bamberger’s contributions do not show up in the box score. Bamberger is a hard-nosed, pressure defender, often sacrificing her body to get the charge called.
CHELSEA LATELY
After a career day vs. BGSU, scoring 17 points, Chelsea Falkenstein recorded a career-high four blocks against Murray State, while also leading the Aces with 16 points. Falkenstein ranks second in the MVC with a .591 field-goal percentage and third with 16.5 ppg.
