CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.—After Kentucky stole a win earlier in the day, the University of Evansville softball team bounced back to grab a victory from Austin Peay to give first-year head coach Mark Redburn his first UE win at the Frost Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Evansville 3, Austin Peay 0

“I think the players did a good job of letting the first game go and then focusing on going out and finishing the day in a positive way with a win,” Redburn said. “We got more aggressive at the plate and on the bases, and it paid off.

“Three runs early was enough as Kendall (Kautz) was able to go the distance. Our outfield made some really key plays, and we hit the ball much better. Our more complete game of pitching, defense and offense allowed us to win that game.”

The Purple Aces did the scoring in the first two innings. Freshman Tamara Robey was the first across the home plate in the first inning after getting on first with a walk. A sacrifice hit from senior Jamie Lindauer advanced Robey to second while a single from sophomore Ashleigh Rahming brought her home. After getting on first with a hit by pitch, Senior Krista Price also scored in the first on a passed ball.

An error from the Lady Govs in the second allowed freshman Alicia Betancur to score the final run for the Aces. Betancur reached base on a single up the middle and advanced to second after freshman Halie Malone grounded out.

Freshman Kautz (1-0) took the win for the Aces after striking out six batters and walking two. Kautz allowed seven hits in her first collegiate game.

Kentucky 8, Evansville 0

After holding the Wildcats at bay the first two innings, a five-run third inning pushed UK ahead of the Purple Aces to win the game 8-0 in five innings.

Jen McKee (0-1) took the loss for the Aces after giving up 11 hits, four walks and striking out two. Although UE took no hits offensively, UK’s Amber Matousek (2-1) walked seven batters, including Lindauer three times.

“We certainly didn’t play well,” Redburn said. “We had several opportunities to get easy outs. We took too many good pitches at the plate, and just made some unacceptable mental mistakes. But we are young in terms of what we have to learn in order to be a more competitive team at this level. I also have to take into account that we did not have one practice outside as a full team prior to this day.”

The Aces take the field again in Chattanooga on Saturday, as they face Georgetown at 9 a.m. and Wright State at 2 p.m.
