The University of Evansville women’s basketball team will wrap up its current four-game homestand on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. as the Purple Aces will tangle with the Panthers of the University of Northern Iowa. Sunday’s game can be heard live on 91.5 F.M.-WUEV.
Evansville (4-17 overall, 1-9 MVC) is hoping for a better start and finish to Sunday’s game than its Friday night contest against Bradley, as the Braves used an 11-0 start and a 9-1 finish to secure a 68-58 victory over UE. During the first four minutes and last two minutes of the game, Evansville went a combined 1-of-6 from the floor with six turnovers which led to nine of Bradley’s 20 points during that time frame. The Braves, meanwhile, went 8-of-13 combined during that six-minute span, while not committing a turnover. In the other 34 minutes of the contest, UE outscored Bradley, 55-48, while committing just 13 turnovers against the Braves’ 25 miscues.
“The start and the finish to Friday night’s game really spoiled what I?thought was a good effort for the most part against Bradley,” said UE head coach Misty Murphy. “I thought that the team did a good job of battling back and fighting on Friday, but you can not dig yourself an 11-point hole to start a game and expect to win. You also have to be able to finish plays down the stretch to win close games, and we did not do that. Hopefully, we can learn from those two mistakes beginning on Sunday against UNI.”
The Panthers will come to town with a 9-12 overall record and 5-5 conference mark after holding off Southern Illinois, 71-62, on Friday night in Carbondale, Illinois. Sophomore guard Jacqui Kalin continued her recent hot play by leading a pack of three Panthers in double-figures with 18 points. Kalin has stepped up to average 21.0 points per game over UNI’s last four contests, and she currently ranks second in the MVC in scoring in league play at over 17.7 points per game. She was one of five Panthers to reach double-figures against Evansville on January 9, as UNI raced past Evansville, 99-67, in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
“Jacqui Kalin can hurt you in so many different ways,” said Murphy. “Friday, she didn’t have a great shooting night, as she was just 3-of-14 from the floor, but she was able to get to the foul line 10 times and hit 10 free throws to help her team. The game before, she hit five threes and scored 34 points. She is a tremendous player, and we will have our hands full with trying to contain her tomorrow, because she really makes their offense go.”
Evansville leads the all-time series over UNI, 18-17, although the Panthers have won the last three series meetings.
