NORMAL, Ill. - The first place Illinois State University softball team certainly played like a league leader Saturday. The Redbirds (21-10, 9-0) shut out the University of Evansville (11-20, 5-8) 10-0 and 6-0 to keep their grasp on the top spot in the Missouri Valley Conference. The two teams complete the series with a 12 noon game Sunday.
In the first game, ISU pushed runs across in all five innings, including three in the first when Elizabeth Kay doubled down the left field line to drive in one run and Michelle Henderson followed with a two-run homer. That was all that Megan Warner needed to improve her pitching record to 9-4. Jamie Lindauer had two of Evansville's four basehits in the five-inning shutout.
Game two was scoreless until the third inning when Illinois State scored twice against UE starter Kendall Kautz. The Redbirds added one run in the fourth and Henderson hit her second two-run home run of the day in the fifth. Jordan Birch pitched the shutout, fanning 10 Aces and giving up only two hits, to Lindauer and Amy Gaertner.
