EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Indiana State used two home runs to secure its first Missouri Valley Conference win of 2010 against the University of Evansville softball team, as the Aces (10-15, 5-6 MVC) fell 4-2 against the Sycamores (12-17, 1-7 MVC) on Saturday at James and Dorothy Cooper Stadium.
INS’ Lindsey Beisser (3-1) went the whole seven innings for the win, as she gave up five hits, five walks and five strikeouts. Freshman Kendall Kautz (8-5) also went all the way with five hits, three strikeouts and no walks.
Junior Jen Stahlhut went 2-for-4 at the plate with one run scored while senior Krista Price and freshmen Halie Malone and Tamara Robey each earned a hit. The Sycamores had five players go 1-for-3 while Bailey Wittenauer recorded two RBI.
The Sycamores opened the game with a two-run first inning after Stephanie Robinson got to third after a hit by pitch, passed ball and sacrifice bunt from Amber Paz. Wittanauer then hit her third homer of the season to grab the first lead.
UE quickly countered in the bottom of the first, as senior Jamie Lindauer reached on an error before Stahlhut singled. With both runners double stealing for third and second, Price walked and went to second on a passed ball to score Lindauer. Groundouts from sophomores Amy Gaertner and Allison Aguilera then scored Stahlhut to tie the game.
INS came out in the second with an Alyssa Marcum hit before a putout and sacrifice bunt advanced her to third. Stephanie Robinson then doubled to put the score at 3-2. The Sycamores secured their win in the sixth inning with Stephanie Jonson tapping one right over the left field wall.
The Aces will shortly leave Cooper Stadium next week, as they travel to Austin Peay for a 5 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday before returning to take on Western Kentucky in a 5 p.m. two-game match.
