At Age 40, Weir Returns To Rangers

Former University of Evansville All-American David Weir turned 40 in May, but he's still a valuable commodity at the highest level of European soccer. Weir this week signed a one-year contract that will keep him with Rangers FC in Glasgow for a fourth season. Despite Weir's age, it was no surprise that he decided to return. Weir was chosen in April by the Scottish Football Writers Association as Scottish Premier League Player of the Year. He has led his side to two consecutive Premier League championships.

Weir burst onto the soccer scene for Coach Fred Schmalz's Purple Aces in the late '80s and earned first team All-America honors in 1990 when he led UE to the NCAA Final Four (now 'College Cup'). He has played professionally for four teams in England and Scotland. Weir signed a six-month contract with the Rangers in 2007, and has stayed ever since. In fact, he was chosen as team captain in April of 2009. Weir has played for Scotland's national team for much of his career, and was the first former U.S. collegiate player to appear in the World Cup for a European team.
