The numbers are adding up in a hurry for the 3-1-0 University of Evansville soccer team, which hosts the Belmont University Bruins (2-2-0) Wednesday at McCutchan Stadium at 7:00. Here are just some of the numbers going Evansville’s way: Senior forward
Mike Luttrull is number three nationally in points per game (2.75) and number five in goals per game (1.25). As a team, the Aces are third best nationally in scoring with 3.5 goals per game, and third in total goals (14). UE is ranked fifth in the NSCAA Midwest Region poll this week behind Tulsa, Creighton, SMU and UAB. Nationally, the Aces are ranked 28th by Soccer Times, 29th by College Soccer News, and 31st in the NSCAA/Hendrickcars.com and TopDrawerSoccer.com polls.
The Aces on Wednesday have a chance to do something that no Evansville team has done since 1991: record three consecutive shutouts. UE allowed at least one goal in each of the last five games in 2009, and the first two in 2010. But last weekend produced 9-0 and 2-0 wins, over Alabama A&M and East Tennessee State in the ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic. Evansville has recorded back-to-back shutouts a number of times, but not three in a row since the 1991 NCAA Tournament team did it twice in the same season.
Belmont opened with a 4-0 loss at Memphis and 2-1 loss at SIU-Edwardsville before beating Centenary 5-2 and Gardner-Webb 2-1 at home. The leading scorer is sophomore forward Brandon Tarr, a transfer from South Carolina who has scored three goals and added one assist for seven points. This is the third time that Belmont and Evansville have played since Mike Jacobs became head coach in 2006. Belmont won in Nashville in 2006, 1-0. UE won 4-1 at Evansville in 2007.
