A back and forth match yielded chances for both sides, but it was the University of Kentucky that made the most of its biggest opportunities Sunday at McCutchan Stadium.
Junior Sam Brooks connected on a shot from 25 yards out that hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced across the goal line late in the second overtime to give his Wildcats a 2-1 victory over the University of Evansville. Evansville and Kentucky came into Sunday's match ranked seventh and eighth, respectively, in the most recent NSCAA Midwest Region rankings.
Set pieces accounted for both scores during regulation play. Kentucky's Ellis Vienne headed in Drew Midkiff's corner kick to put UK up 1-0 at 24:17. At 56:01, freshman Brandon Causey tied the score for Evansville when Tom Irvin's long throw-in went just over the head of Jarrett Robbins, who leaped to try to score with a header, and found the foot of Causey, who tapped it in for the equalizer.
Both teams had close calls late in regulation and in overtime before Brooks' blast won it for UK, now 3-4-1. Evansville is 4-3-1 heading into Wednesday's match at Indiana University.
Evansville finished with 21 shots, led by four from Tad Kreamalmeyer and three from Tyler Kincaid. Kentucky had 20 shots, with Midkiff leading the way with five. Winning keeper Tyler Beadle turned away six of Evansville's seven shots on goal, and Phil Boerger had four saves for the Aces.
