The University of Evansville women’s tennis team topped Morehead State University, 5-2, Saturday night at Tri-State Athletic Club in Evansville. It was the first match of the season, marking first-year coach Nick Mueller’s first career win at the helm.

“I’m very proud of the way the team bounced back in singles play,” said Mueller. “They really stepped it up and played to their capabilities.” The Aces lost 2-of-3 matches in the doubles, but answered back with five wins in singles play.

In doubles play, Morehead State took the point, winning second and third doubles. However, the duo of senior Kate Chybowksi and junior Theadora Kotsiou topped their opponents, 8-2 in first slot.

Chybowksi and Kotsiou also went on to win their matches in first and second singles, respectively. Chybowksi came away with 6-4, 6-1 win over Alix Young, while Kotsiou won easily (6-0, 6-1) over Alexandra Rydberg.

Number three junior Aleksandra Dzakula (6-3, 6-0), number four senior Ashton Schwerin (6-3, 6-3), and number six sophomore Carolyn Caire (6-3, 6-3) all won their respective matches, carrying the Aces to victory.

Schwerin’s win clinched the team victory for the Aces in the four spot. The only singles point Morehead State earned was at number five, with Victoria Cran’s super tiebreaker win over Pin Sorensen (6-3, 4-6, (10-3)).

Evansville is back in action next Saturday when the Aces travel to take on Wisconsin at 9:00 a.m. CST.
