EVANSVILLE, Ind. – After a first half defensive battle, the visiting Missouri State Bears scored three goals in the second stanza, earning a 3-0 win over the University of Evansville men’s soccer team Saturday night at Arad McCutchan Stadium. With the loss, the Purple Aces now own a 5-6 overall record and 0-3 mark in the Missouri Valley Conference, while MSU evens its record at 5-5-2 and 3-0 in the Valley.
In the first half, the squads combined for three total shots, two by UE and one by the Bears, but no one found the back of the net.
However, the offensive attacks picked up after the break, as Missouri State broke the 0-0 tie just a minute into the second half. UE goalkeeper
Eric Teppen got two hands on Jared Clark’s shot from the right side, but the ball tipped up and tricked into the back of net for Clark’s first goal of the season.
In the 55
th minute, Clark tallied his second score, rebounding a shot by teammate Jordan Hoffman and save by Teppen in a jumble directly in front of the goal.
The Bears added an insurance goal in the 82
nd minute on a breakaway. Parker Maher passed ahead to Alexander Cole in the right front corner of the box who was able to knock it into the opposite side of the net.
In the match, the Bears held an 8-6 shot and 6-4 shot on goal advantage, while both squads earned one corner kick. Junior
Jesse Sharp led Evansville with three shots, including two on goal.
Teppen finished with four saves in the match, while MSU keeper Trevor Spangenberg recorded the shutout and four saves, as well.
The Aces are back in action Wednesday when they travel to Central Arkansas for a 3:00 p.m. CT start. UE returns home Oct. 22 for a non-conference contest versus Butler at 7:00 p.m. CT.
