CLEVELAND, Miss.- The University of Evansville’s women’s swimming and diving team ended the weekend in first place with a total score of 1205 in the Christmas Invitational hosted by Delta State. The men’s team finished second with a total score of 738.
For the women’s team, freshman Michelle Tipton started strong with a first place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle in the time of 17:05.71. Senior Alex Howard and freshman Taylor Shotwell took first and second place in the 200-yard backstroke with times of 2:05.25 and 2:09.62, respectively. Tipton took another first place finish with junior Michea Reinitz finishing second in the 100-yard freestyle in 51.09 and 52.34, respectively. In 200-yard breaststroke, freshman Caroline Lee and junior Jill Enge finished second and third with times of 2:22.11 and 2:24.50, respectively. Freshman Samantha Montgomery placed first in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:06.59. Howard, Tipton, Montgomery, and Reinitz ended the meet with a first place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:34.66.
Freshman Matthew Newland started the meet for the men’s team with a third place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:32.24. Sophomore Ryan Metzger and senior Jacob Harrington took first and second with times of 1:54.26 and 1:54.87, respectively. In the 100-yard freestyle, junior Kyle Tiemann placed third in 47.12. Senior Will Spradley, freshman Ashton Bishop, Tiemann, and Harrington finished third in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a final time of 3:08.52.
The Aces will return to action on January 14, hosting a dual meet against Vanderbilt.
